Labor Day Weekend RV & Hiking @ Lake Vesuvius Pedro, Ohio

9/1 – 9/3/18

Iron Ridge Campground, South side of the lake

Day #1

Since I had to work on Friday and Saturday at 3pm on Labor Day, we didn’t think we were going to be able to get out to enjoy any of the long weekend.  As luck would have it, we were able to find the very last open campsite (for Saturday and Sunday nights) in all of the Ohio State Park system; thanks to a last-minute cancellation.  This is our first time at this location.  It is a quiet, small, peaceful setting and probably one of the nicer RV sites we have yet to encounter.  We had site #3, which was nestled under lots of trees and contained a double paved pad (perfect for accommodating guests or group camping), an oversized picnic table, and a fire ring with an attached grill.  It was mostly flat and perfect for adding a bug shelter or for additional tents and has electric and water (no sewer) hookups.  The cost is only $20 per night, the least expensive of all the sites we have stayed at to date.

We arrived around 2:00 pm on Saturday, which is when check-in was.  We set up our new EZ-Up tent and screen room, which turned out to be one of the best investments ever!  (I’m an Amazon Affiliate, so here’s a shameless plug of links if you’d like to buy this awesome tent combo)!  Not only is this a great way to enjoy being outside without the mosquitoes, but it also is a great place for the cats to hang out when not on their leashes, which is actually why we bought it in the first place!  Of course, they can’t be left unattended in it due to the fact that they can totally tear it up and break out; but they were pretty happy to hang out in there with us.

Tonight’s camp food consisted of BBQ boneless ribs cooked over the fire and Bob Evan’s mashed potatoes cooked in the RV’s oven.  I realize this is nothing special, but when it comes to prepping for our trips, I am constantly drawing a blank of possible meal combinations beyond the usual hotdogs and hamburgers, so I was pretty please with this choice.

Day #2

It was really nice to “sleep in” for a change, have a huge breakfast (Eggs, bacon, and hash browns), and hit the trail at noon; which is much later than we usually do anytime we have a long hike or trail run planned.  We paid the price because the humidity was thick and our planned “slog” (walk/run) was reduced to a walk.  We got 9+ miles in over the course of 3 hours and felt completely wiped out by the midpoint.

We missed lunch with having had such a late breakfast, so tonight’s menu of homemade chili and all beef hotdogs was a welcome treat.  I cooked in the RV since the forecast was looking rather grim and a fire unlikely.  In fact, we even tore down the EZ-Up tent and planned to not have a fire tonight for this reason.  However, as luck would have it, the storm blew past with only a few sprinkles, so after dinner, we were able to go grab some wood a few miles away at the only general store in the area, which is located close to the park entrance.

We headed home fairly early Monday morning so to get the RV unloaded, cleaned up, and returned to its storage area just in time for me to get to work by 3:00 for some much needed “holiday pay”.  I’m glad we decided to make the best of the limited time off we had, as we got to experience one of the Ohio’s State park’s hidden gems.

We will definitely be back to run this trail once we are in better shape!  If you want a clean, quiet place to camp, Iron Ridge Campground is your place.  If you want well-cleared, moderately tough trails to hike/run, the Lakeshore Trail is for you.
